My hen has been faithfully laying in one spot for about 9 months, but I have not found an egg in over a week. I recently discovered a rats nest near the coop (which I have poisoned) but still have not found any eggs. Is it possible that my hen has found another spot to lay? If so, how do i discover her new spot without stalking her all morning??

Hi Bozrah, from Suffield! My first two thoughts when you mentioned her age were "is she molting or broody?" That would explain the drop in production. The rats could be eating the eggs (if you didn't get them all) or she could have found another nest elsewhere. Hard to know until you come across another collection somewhere.

Time to get a chick-cam!

I recommend:

1) you make certain the rats are poisoned and gone;

2) make certain your hen has plenty of food and water (the rat may have been stealing);

3) give her time to get over stress and malnutrition; and,

4) last, consider how much sun light she is getting.

You didn't mention where you are from. Is it spring where you are, or . . .?
