Everyday is Easter at my house.
Back story?

My 5 month old RIR hens started squatting about 2-3 weeks ago... and I knew the eggs would be rolling in any time now. 1 week ago I discovered the first egg in the nesting boxes!
I was beyond happy. I found two more the following day, one was deformed. After that, I found not one more single egg in the hen house.

I started hunting... listening for the oh so familiar egg laying squawk. And the results?
Almost everyday they all layed in different locations. 4 days ago, I was out of luck finding 2 eggs and went on a search... someone had created a little nest off in the bushes dedicated to laying for two of the hens. I was delighted they started laying in a frequent spot. I placed a golf ball in there so that they would continue to lay, and they have. as for the OTHER two, they are a mystery. I haven't been able to find their eggs... and I still have my ears open for the squawking.
I did happen to find 3 eggs tonight, so I am hoping that there will be a new girl laying there as well, and I only have one left to search for.

Do you guys have any egg hunting stories? I'd love to hear.

As for the squatting, they still do it. Its very amusing to see. The most frequent squatters are Lumpy and Velly, I do my best to imitate a rooster and stimulate them, by placing my palm over their wings and back, sliding my hands towards the tail, and squeezing according to their body the closer I get to the end of the tail. Seeing the results, I apparently make a good rooster. Sometimes I feel a bit odd doing it, but I'm happy I can be a satisfying rooster for them

One time Lumpy followed me around for an entire HOUR while I was planting some things in the garden, she squatted and waited every moment I paused until I finally had the extra hand to give her what she wanted

That girl is one needy chicken.

Does anyone have some squatting stories they would like to share as well?

I'd love to hear

Welcome to BYC!

My egg hunting story is this: my hens think hiding eggs from me is the best thing ever. I wanted to create some nests for broody hens, so they wouldn't use the main nest boxes. I set up around 23 nesting sites for them in all! Now I have to search at least their favorites every night! They like to stop using some and start using new ones so it gets really confusing. Every morning they like to get out and go running to their favorite nest site, which helps you find where it is.

I have five roosters. My hens are tired of romance.
