Egg in the run

I guess one of the girls decided she couldn't make it to the nest box or didn't want to. My son went in the run and almost stepped on it. Is this common?

Ive had a new hen do that.

I've only had them lay outside the coop or on the coop floor when young. They quickly get the hang of it though and start laying in the nest boxes with the others.
