I was out with my chickens when I noticed one was not moving a ton and looked like she was straining to poop. I picked her up and her crop felt quite full, but it was not hard. She passed a white glob and an egg with no shell. I have included pictures of what she passed, any ideas?

Did you check her crop first thing in the morning or was this later after she had access to food? Crops should only be empty first thing in the morning and after that they should start to feel full. As for the egg, what are you feeding her and are you offering oyster shell in the side?

This happened right before sundown. I am new to chickens and this is the first time I actually felt a crop, so maybe it was full due to them about to roost. Their food has oyster in it, as well as free choice oyster.

It is supposed to be full at sundown so her crop is normal. How long has she been laying for? If she just started laying and this is the first time it happened just keep an eye on her. If it happens again I would recommend giving her extra calcium orally.

She has been laying since about June. They are all roosting, so I’m going to check on her in the morning. This is the first time this has happened with her, could this be a one off? They have access to calcium, I don’t want her to get too much, winter is coming and I think the egg production is about to slow down or stop for winter.
