Has anyone had Any luck keeping a chick alive when it's egg has broken? My silkies are hatching in about 4 days and one of them just got stuck in the turner mechanism (my fault) and has shattered. The the shell is completely smashed and the inner seal around the chick is ruptured but there's no bleeding. The chick is alive and was squeaking abit at first but its not moving very much. I've put a bit of oil around the exposed membrane to stop it drying out. It's been 15 minutes and it's still alive, is there much hope that it will survive?

This is the extent of the damage :( he's still alive and its been an hour now so I'm feeling hopeful. I figured that he'll need something to protect him and keep him moist so I've put him inside a disposable latex glove and poked some small holes in it. Then put him in a lid off a can so he can feel a bit more secure. His nest mate has just started hatching so this broken one may not be so far behind

If you hear it squeaking it has to have pipped internally, doesn't it? If so then you might have a chance. I would be very sure to keep it separate in the incubator (away from other hatched chicks who can knock it) and keep it from drying out as you have done. It's up to the chick to get finished. No bleeding can only be a good sign!

I had this same thing happen in what of my previous hatches :( It sucks, I'm sorry it happened to you </3
