when do chickens start to lay? My older ones are passed 2 yrs old and are stopping. I can't remember how old they were when they started laying? I have many breeds. They are all about 15 wks old. I don't like buying store eggs. My lt brahma and little girl got third place at our fair! Oh yea, do most people say "orps" for orpingtons? I am kinda of new at the chicken thing.

14 to 24 weeks is average, if your hens combs are getting redder or they squat when you get near then you will have eggs soon.
But each flock is different there is no specific time

My pullets are 17 weeks now and I have not found an egg yet.
But it seems to me some of the pullets are getting wider in the rump. I have not seen them squatting, even for a rooster. They fight off the roosters' advances. But hopefully the width of the rump is a sign of maturity.

Edit for spelling
