The pullet I have that lays from the roost bars also lays outside in the middle of the yard. There are plenty of nest boxes - I don't think its about competition.
She's just finishing a molt now and hasn't laid in 5-6 wks so I'll be curious to see where she lays once she starts up again. Her eggs are often brittle and thin shelled as well (she has access to yoghurt, oyster shell and lots of calcium rich veggies). She's not a great layer even when her eggs are normal, but she's interesting looking and lays a beautiful blue egg so I accept her as she is.
