Here Goes, does a hen get her egg laying ability equally from both parents or more from one or the other? Like if you take a rooster from a prolific egg laying breed and mate him to a breed that doesn't lay well at all, will the offspring's egg laying ability be a mix of the two, some laying well and others not so good or would it average both parents out into an okay layer? The reason i am asking is my best friends dad says that a rooster from a good layer crossed with a bad laying hen will always have better laying offspring than a rooster from a bad laying breed crossed with a hen who is a great layer. I hope this is understandable because i have myself confused just trying to type it out. I guess what it comes down to is, does a hen get her egg laying traits more from her father or mother? Just something i have thought about, I dont know anything about genetics and I figured someone might be able to shed some light on the subject for me.
That is if they can decipher this riddle lol.

Egg laying ability is not sex linked so the answer is no. Prolific egg laying is a polygenic trait and dependent upon other factors like environment, health and stress. A very complicated subject.
