I apologize if this specific question has been asked and answered already, but I guess my search word choices were poor, or I needed too many....

Anyhow, for flock planning purposes, I am wondering what the effective egg-laying lifespan is of Red Sussex cross, which I suspect is also known as Red Sex Link.

Thank you in advance!

Red Sussex is a breed and a cross is a mutt not a sex link. Unless it was sold as a sex link which means it was bred with thoughts to that and not just a random cross. Hope I made that clear.

Ok now to answer the question a sex link will lay steady for 2 soild years if they make it that long. These tend to burn out fast.

If you have a red sussex cross you will see laying well past that in years. Some will lay 4 to 8 years with later years being less than first two.

Your last sentence answers my question well, thank you!

Uh, not too sure about the first sentence, but I guess it doesn't matter.

The Red Sussex cross is sold as that. The chicks are sold sexed, being differently coloured, male vs. female. RIR sire, White Plymouth Rock dame, if I understand correctly.
Thank you for answering!

Then they are sex links and not just a random cross. If they are sold sexed then they are sex links. A random cross you would not be able to color sex. Now the questions is did they come from a hatchery or a breeder? That makes a differenace too. Hatchery sex links will burn out in 2 years but a breeders might last a bit long.

These were hatchery sex links. So I assume their effective egg-laying life will be about two years, and I will plan to get their replacements two springs from now, to pick up where they leave off. Probably from a hatchery again

unless I can find a breeder around here.

Thank you for clarifying! Hatchery vs. breeder sure seems to make a difference.
