About a week ago we came home after five days away to find 31 eggs laid by our 5 6 month-old buff Orpington chickens. Needless to say we were very excited! But since then the laying has really slowed down and we are only getting two eggs a day. We are wondering why the slowdown in egg production after the initial burst we have a large chicken run that we left them in while we were on vacation and that is when we came home to find the 31 eggs. Now since we are home, we have been letting them free range almost every day. maybe this has something to do with it? Any feedback is appreciated.

Not saying for sure but you might want to look around your free range area to see if they may be laying eggs somewhere other than where they laid while you were gone.

X2.... confined they had no choice but to lay where you h could find them

Bummer is confining to train a free range birds to lay in coop usually keeps them laying in coop...and yours are not, might have to keep them locked up until late in day for another week.

31 eggs from 5 birds over 5 days....someone is laying 2 a day...or you were gone 6 days...or someone is pranking you.
