egg laying

Signs I noticed with my girl was a week before she laid her first egg she would spent a lot of time in the coop ...just checking it out often. Also the girls were more vocal

3 of my wonderful hens were doing that today. Found 2 eggs. not surprisingly, one wasn't in a box, even though she had been clucking up and turning around and around in that box. I'm pretty sure the one that hadn't layed had done so this morning. I hope your chicken eggs up that box soon!

do they really need 16 hours of sunlight for egg production?

I don't think so. My dad had us lock up the chickens for about 2 weeks without letting them out because they either disappeared at night or wouldn't sleep in the coop, since we free range until we finish their pen, and thats when we started getting eggs. Filled up two and a half cartons me thinks with them just sitting in their coop doing nothing. So no, I do not believe they need 16 hours of sunlight a day to lay eggs, though it's probably nice ^^

LOL anyway have learned alot here.
