I got my first batch of 6 day-old chicks at the beginning of August. I believe that chickens usually start laying eggs at around 5-6 months old. Since my chickens won't be that age until January-February, I was wondering if they won't start laying until later in the Spring when the sunlight hours are longer or if they might start laying in January. Anyone started chickens at this same time that knows? Thanks.

First, welcome to our forum!

No one can tell you with certainty. Some breeds are more likely to start at the traditional 5-6 months, and some may wait. Of course, there is also individual variation. In Southern California, there may not be any weather that they will really perceive as winter, though, so this may make laying eralier more likely.
