So I got a new horizontal incubator, meaning you lay the eggs on their side. It’s supposedly turning them every 2 hrs. However when I candle (day 8), half will be clear and the other half dark. What’s causing this separation? Is this normal for a horizontal incubator? I see movement in all the eggs inside the dark half.

Everything is fine! :D

I noticed the same in my eggs but I've only used a horizontal incubator and I've only hatched one batch (so very new still!). My eggs that looked like that were all developing normally.

When in doubt just keep them in the incubator then wait and see!

years later but curious - did they hatch? mine all look like this too - they were shipped eggs and now are on day 9, hoping they're all still viable

Before asking a question in an old thread it’s smart to look at the persons profile. : Last seen May 4, 2024

Do not expect an answer. If you want some answers about strange looking insides of eggs during the incubation time in relation to the hatch rate , its best to start a new thread.

That is very normal days 5-9 or so, it first freaked me out as I assumed my eggs were all stuck to the shell, but it does move, albeit slowly, like honey, in a living egg it oozes slowly to the top but it can take 30 seconds so seems to stay ‘stuck forever.’ If it sloshes around and floats quickly to the top, it is usually dead. If you aren’t an obsessive candler (only day 5 and pre-lockdown) you might never have seen it, but it is a thing.
