I have heard that some people have used crates for there nesting boxes???? What are your ideas on that. I am wondering if that could be my problem with the hens not laying. I use pine shavings in the coop and then just added straw to it and in the "nest boxes" along with a golf ball in each....

I have 8 nest boxes in my coop 6 wooden and 2 milk crates one is the bigger more rectangular, and the second one is square.
I have six hens currently laying and only one girl uses the wooden boxes all of the others like the milk crates.

The coolest nests i've seen are the ones somebody made out of those 5 gallon jugs of oil for cooking. They're kinda square and they cut our an area in the side of the jug, but in bedding and bam. You have a nest box. My chickens would love it. I just keep forgetting to go around and ask for the jugs. I used a small carrier once because my AO didn't want to lay her eggs on the shelf where the others do. So I gave her a crate. Then the others started using it and she quit. I have even seen people use litter boxes. The ones with the top. Five gallon buckets turned on their side. Small storage containers, without the lids of course.

Thanks so much for your replies:) If you have any pics could you share?? Thanks again,
Amy
