When my wife and I return to our 1/4 acre farm we find fewer eggs and some with holes peeked in them. At first we believed it was the blue jays but now we find it is one of the RIR chickens. My wife gathers the eggs when still warm when we are home but we are looking for a better way.

What I do to put them off egg eating is I blow out an egg, then refill it with soap and leave it for the hen to find. After they break into enough of them and get nothing but a mouthful of soap, they leave them alone.

Welcome to BYC, Tom! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Breaking egg eaters is not fun and sometimes not very easy. Putting fake eggs in the nest that won't break is something good to do. It will confuse the hen as to which is her's if there is lots in there. And again, if she pecks a fake one, it won't break. Here is a link on breaking egg eaters https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/six-tips-on-breaking-your-egg-eater

Good luck to you!

I love this idea! One of our old hens used to break eggs...wish I would have known then! I have heard that breaking eggs can be (but isn't always) a sign that the hens need more calcium in their diet...oyster shell supplement might help.
