Last night our eldest hen was acting unusual, she usually loves to be outdoors eating grass and walking around with the roo but, she was in the nest with her eyes close and she was covered in both yolk and fecies and her bottom was swollen like a balloon at the opening. We picked her up and her head was very limp but her body was stiff. We brought her into the house in a box and watched her and she barley moved except for some slight twitching every few mintues. We inspected her bottom and saw some soft egg shell and gently pulled it out and discovered mucusy blood at the end of it. We were already worried about her well being because her breast was swollen and losing feathers and her back barely had feathers left but we were told that she was molting because she was getting mounted by the roosters too often, so we kept a close eye on the roosters and her. She was also laying jelly eggs ( Eggs with a soft, jelly-like texture that didn't develop properly.) We tried oyster shell but she didn't really like it much.

After a half hour or so we brought her out to the coop and laid her in the nest hoping she would be able to pass whatever it was. This morning I went out to see if she had gotten better but she unfortunately didn't live. I began reading about what may have happened and I think it may have been egg peritonitis but I am not sure. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I have a hen with egg yolk peritonitis, and there is no mess like that, it all seems to be contained to her insides, and with no shells thankfully.
This is new to me so i'm sorry i dont know more about it. I just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss
