I built a homemade self serve honor system egg selling shack and put it out in front of my house.
It is just big enough to hold a mini fridge and a lock box to put money in.
I also made a "Eggs for sale" sign and put it by the road.
I have been selling eggs for $1 a dozen since I built it about 5 years ago.
Mostly because I live in poor community. Basically the welfare capital of the world.
2 months ago I raised the price to $2 per dozen because the Wal Mart in my area is now $1.84 per dozen.
Plus I recently got a bunch chickens that lay cool egg colors like blue, green and olive green.

Well I haven't sold any eggs in about a month. I don't have the ability to accept welfare EBT cards.
Somebody was buying them at $2 per dozen from me for a little while then boom nothing for a month.
Now I have a boat load of eggs and I don't want to go back to $1 to get rid of them.
I posted that I had eggs for sale on Facebook and a Co-worker of mine saw it and told me at work I should lower my prices to $1.
One Co-worker of mine has chickens and sells them to people at work for $1.
I heard another Co-worker say to me why should I pay $2 for your eggs when I can get them from Jackie for $1

So what would you do?
Lower your egg prices to $1?
Say "screw it" and stop selling eggs all together?
Do you think people will buy eggs again once they see the price increase at the grocery stores?

I have a lot of time and money into my flock, the self serve egg shack and road side sign.
Ugh.

Oh my! $1 a dozen! Here free range eggs from the supermarket cost $8-9 a dozen and cage or barn eggs cost about $5-6. I mostly just give my extra eggs away, I sell them for $5 to my work colleagues. I couldn't break even on selling eggs here, my eggs would have to be over $9/doz.

I also think try selling for $1.50 for awhile. People are doing it tough out there right now. Maybe it isn't worth it for you to sell eggs though in future if people won't pay more than $1. I'm sorry!

I'm kinda leaning towards just selling the self serve egg shack and sign.
Then sell a few chickens.
Keep just enough hens for household use and to occasionally give away.
I think if I made a advertisement on Facebook for the egg shack plus sign someone would pay around $300.

Ok I think I have came up with a solution.
I'm going to repaint my egg sign.
It will simply say "EGGS $1"
My wife is a Chef at a Casino and has access to free egg flat cartons they don't have a lid so I will wrap them in clear plastic.
I will cut the egg flats down with a pair of scissors to hold 8 eggs.
Since customers in my area don't care about egg quality or color it's all about price I will sell off my rainbow layer chickens and give them cheap eggs.
I will get a flock of white legorns that pump out white eggs for the cheap people in my area.
So yeah 8 eggs for $1 packaged in free egg flats cartons wrapped in plastic wrap from white leghorns that efficiency pump out plain white eggs.
Cheap A-holes want that they got it.

I wouldnt even bother selling eggs everyone near me has ebts and get eggs free i only have chickens for myself not to make a sale as its not worth the feed to sell eggs $1 a dozen its more of a waste of time.

I also live in an area with cheap eggs. Going rate is $2 here and not worth the hassle for me.

I've started bringing my extras to the community food bank, and they were so happy to have them. There is often something else perishable that won't serve all patrons, so they have the option of that or eggs.

Hubby and I stick around to volunteer. We get to meet our neighbors and help give back to our community. Plus last month they sent some extras home with the volunteers and I have 3 venison roasts! It's been way better than $2/doz eggs IMO.

As above, if your goal is getting rid of extra eggs, I also donate to the local food bank. However, if you want to look into this option, make sure if your local food bank takes them as local law varies place to place. Some don’t take home-produced food at all, some take only certain items, some take them if you have been inspected. And some take almost everything :)
