Hi All,

The chicken bug has bitten me! Ten days ago I rescued two little day old White leghorn chicks and I absolutely adore them. But they are little roo's so I have found a farm home for them when they are feathered out. They are so tame and cuddle by me and eat out of my hand and follow me around the garden. I am going to miss them! So, I am already planning on getting a little hen, or two, which can keep bugs away in the garden, provide some company and supply eggs. I will take very good care of them in return and they will live privileged little lives

I've read the previous posts about RIR(?) and WLH(?) that are the best layers (by popular opinion) but all that is available here are Sussex Light / Brahma and Koekoeks.

Which way would you go considering I would like eggs and a pet?

Thanks so much, will have a look. I have to be careful to get birds that are not too loud. Not any louder than an embden goose at least :)

Most of mine are pretty quite except my Dominiques they get really loud when they lay or when someone else is in the nesting box they want. They also like to lay nests eggs in weird places around the yard

I've been doing so much reading that I'm getting confused with all the info. Are Brahmas the ones that have the black chicks, but males have a white spot on the head

Brahmas have feathered feet and come in different colors. I have light brahmas and they're white with black here's a pic of mine.

Barred rocks and Dominiques have the same color and patterning but different combs. They're very similar and often get mistaken for each other. Barred rocks have a white spot on the top of their head when they're chicks. I've never heard of koekoek but it's possible it's the same but I think the comb is different. I'll need to look at ours

I also included a pic of ur current chicks. The one with the white spot on its head is a barred rock mix

This is a good image to show the difference between the two the pic you posted to koekoeks looks more like a barred rock but could be its own breed. I'm cirious and off to search a bit.
