Someone laid an egg!

Can I ask about your 5 males and 4 females. Do the males fight? Are the girls stressed? I'm asking because I have a higher male to female ratio and the kids aren't keen on culling the extra males. They are only 4 weeks old but so far everyone is getting along great. I have quail though not chickens.

Right now the JGs chase the other ones but no real fights. And they don't seem to be hounding the pullets too much. Of course they are mounting them, but not excessively. I check the pullets daily for signs of overbreeding and they don't show anything. But that can change on a dime or so I've heard so I watch for it daily.

My holdup in getting the flocks rearranged is that the BA flock (the one I'm trying to rehome or otherwise 5 cockerels) is in one of my runs I want to use. Once I can rehome (or cull sadly if I must) those 5, I plan on setting that up as my bachelor flock area. They won't like it but the JGs, Bielefelder, and one CCL will go in that bachelor flock (no more girl access for awhile). I am going to keep one of the CCLs with the 4 pullets.

Interestingly the only cockerels who occasionally puff their feathers at me are the two CCLs. One of them spends most of his day outside of the run (he refuses to go back in the run during daylight), he's like my patrol for the whole area. He's only the 2nd chicken I've named, and it isn't flattering. I call him "Creeper" because he's always creeping around and he'll occasionally harass the other flocks when they free range, but nothing serious. Mostly a little chasing and then he gives up.

The current pecking order among the roosters is JG>JG>CCL>CCL ("Creeper")>Bielefelder. Weird that the Bielefelder is so low, he's pretty much the same size as the two JGs. He doesn't even try to crow anymore.

The other CCL tried to stay out with Creeper yesterday and I thought I'd try it to see how he treats the other flocks when I let them out. He immediately started chasing my BCM cockerel and then pinned him under a part of the coop. I pulled him off and back in the run he went. No real harm other than the BCM's pride.

Lets see the CCL egg! And is the CCL 20/21 weeks now? I have 2 17 week CCLs and zero reddening of their tiny combs and no wattles at all. I feel like they are going to be late bloomers unless they go from tiny and pink to big and red over night lol

My CCLs are almost 21 weeks, and 2/3 could be the layer. One still has a bit of light pink in her comb.

The egg weighs just .96 oz. which makes it less than peewee! The SS eggs are right at peewee.

It’s so pretty! I’m sure it will get bigger. Everything I’ve read says medium egg! Is this your first CCL? I’m excited for my first! Good to know possibly only 4-6 weeks longer to wait! I have a 3rd CCL but I think she’s only around 2-2.5 months so she’s got a ways to go.

This oldest flock are my first chickens, and the SS is my oldest! She hatched all by her lonesome out of 6 (lesson learned there on Ebay eggs, get at least 10 or 12!). She is 148 days old, and the CCLs are 143-145 days.

I'm going to try hatching maybe next year. I know my kids would love that experience. I'll prob get 12-18 eggs to account for prob 1/2 being roos!
