I never have used a light to extend egg laying for my ladies. Well, for the last two months, my four hens - 2 RIR, 1 JG & 1 EE - have averages 7-8 eggs a week. Within the last week, their egg production speed up to 8 eggs per week. Yeserday, and tody, their production rocketed back to one egg each/day. My egg carton is now brimming. The egg drought is over. Also, this the first normal laying period after the whole flock's first molt. I can say without a doubt all of the eggs have noticable become larger and deeper in colour. The Jersey Giant's eggs are so big, that even jumbo cartons can't be closed on them.

My first year was without a light and laying was spotty at best. I have been using a light for 2 years now and yes it does increase their laying and makes it more consistant. I have my light set on a timer. I let is get dark natrually and the timer turns it on early in the morning around 3am. I have 12 hens and get 10 on a average day and have had as high as 14, not real sure how that happened but I will take it. I have one Jersey giant and you are right those eggs a huge, I am glad I didn't have to lay it...lol
