Hi everybody. I have a question on egg production. I am only interested in egg layers for my flock, no hatching of eggs, when I purchased my chicks I got two Roos in my batch. I plan on butchering the Roos however somebody told me I should keep the Roos as they will help the hens egg production. Is this true?

This is actually a common myth, I’ve heard. Hens will lay eggs regardless of a Roo in the flock. We live in an area where roosters are not allowed, and our girls lay 5-6 days/week each.

Egg production can vary greatly by breed however, so if you have several different breeds like I do, each girl may lay on a different schedule (ie every other day vs every day, or only 3 days a weeks vs 5). I’ve read that the darker the eggshell color, the longer between eggs, as a general rule of thumb.

All in all, it’s safe to butcher your Roos without jeopardizing the quality OR quantity of your eggs, since you are not looking for any hatching eggs from your flock.

Good luck and enjoy that chicken dinner! :D
