Hey everyone,
I made lemon bars yesterday and it required 6 eggs. All of which when I cracked them, their yolks were very runny. They were practically liquid. I've been noticing this a lot lately. They have access to crushed oyster shells but show no interest in them. They get treats once in a while such as melon rinds but lately I haven't had many scraps to give them. Earlier in the summer when they were laying a lot, I would give them some eggs. But now that it is hotter and they haven't been laying much, I collect all the eggs for me to eat since there isn't enough for them. Back when I was giving them lots of eggs and they were getting their protein and calcium and everything, their eggs were fine. Runny yolks weren't a problem. But now that they aren't getting their eggs, their yolks are super runny. Is there anything I can give them daily to substitute the eggs?
Plus, when will a hen stop laying? I have three hens which are 4 years old and two are definitely laying. Is this unusual?

What is their main diet?
A good chicken ration?
What are the protein and calcium percentages?
Their main diet is Kalmbach crumble. 17% protein. I'm not sure about calcium percentage. They have access to it all day🙂
They have been on Kalmbach for most of their lives and have been laying good eggs until now.

Are you refrigerating eggs or letting them set on the counter? Eggs kept at room temperature will have runnier easy to break yolks compared to refrigerated eggs.

We leave our eggs out on the counter. We have never refrigerated them unless we need cold eggs for a recipe 🙂

It could be the heat that is causing it. I had went somewhere for a couple days, so the eggs stayed in the nests. It was at least 90° each day I was gone. When I used the eggs, because they were still good, their yolks were super runny and did not stay together. Even after I regfridgerated them after collecting them.

Oh that would make sense actually, sometimes I leave the eggs in the nest boxes when it is 85 degrees out 😬
