My 5 month old pekin layed her first egg on Saturday, another on Sunday, monday, and Tuesday mornings - all perfect but when I came home yesterday, and was cleaning their pool and pen, she came into the pen and layed 2 more eggs, right beside me, the second quite smaller than the first but neither had a shell. She didn't lay this morning. Is this normal when they first start laying? I feed a mixture of wild game feed and layer pellets and have another bowl of free choice oyster shell. Do I need to do anything else for her? Thanks!

Hi K2K! Congrats on your eggs!

It is perfectly normal for the first few weeks of egg-laying for the duck to produce some pretty funky looking eggs! Some could be small, HUGE, mis-shapen, all yolk, no yolk, double yolk, with shells that might be bumpy, smooth, gritty, thick in places and thin in places and sometimes no shell at all! Her reproductive systems are new to the whole egg-laying thing and it will all settle down in a few weeks into a nice routine with fairly consistently sized and shaped eggs - so long as you can find them!

Have fun eating them all though!
