Egg sack or intestine?

This is my first hatch and this chick pipped in day 20 then nothing else. On day 22 I assisted him. He got himself out of the egg after his head was freed. I know a lot of people would say I shouldn’t have helped but... others say I should so... He has what I fear is intestine coming out at his umbilical site. I soaked it to remove a bit of egg shell that was stuck to it and then put some triple antibiotic on it. I’ve readied my kids for his probable death. Anything I can do?

That may be unabsorbed yolk sac. The ointment was a good idea. Given time it may absorb and the chick may be fine. But it can also lead to a weaker chick or an infection, so no guarantees. Keep in on clean cloth or puppy pads rather than loose bedding, make sure it won't stick to anything, and that other chicks can't peck at it.

When there is an unabsorbed yolk sac, there is a danger of E.coli infection and peritonitis. Keeping it clean and letting it absorb are key.

So it’s June 18, the chick is doing well, his yolk sack has shrunk/shriveled. I saw a video where a guy trimmed it off a little at a time. I have not done that. Wanted to get some opinions on what to do. Thank you

So, his yolk sack disappeared. Must have fallen off or something. In the morning it was there and in the evening it was gone! Yay! He has finally been able to be reintegrated with his fellow hatchlings. So happy. He had a rough week. Thanks for your help
