Definitely look for evidence of digging or tracks.
I suggest a live trap. You can probably get one at the feed store. I'd suggest the raccoon size. I attached a piece of plywood to the bottom of mine so they could not turn it over and escape. You could bait it with an egg obviously, bit I think I'd try peanut butter first. It has a strong smell and most predators will be attracted to it.
I used black sunflower seed in suburban New Orleans, baiting for squirrels after they chewed off some flashing and caused a lot of water damage to my house. I caught squirrels, rats, opossom, and doves. Some I released unharmed immediately, some I took over 7 miles from the house (that's the recommended distance for squirrels so they will not return) and some I dispatched on the spot. I'll let you guess which. I like a live trap as your never know what a spring trap or poison will catch. And I caught over 50 squirrels in my back yard in less than a month. It stopped most of the damage they cause.
