I have a hen that has been laying rather odd for the last month or so. She is almost a year old and has laid about 8 to 10 fairy eggs and only 2 or 3 regular eggs in the last month. I have been feeding the flock Purena Flock Raiser with plenty of access to oyster shells for calcium for about 4 months now. I just switched back over to Purena Layena after we noticed some of the egg shells were getting weak. I am fearful her behavior is due to a lack of calcium. Her comb and wattle are still a vibrant red and she shows no physical signs of illness. Yesterday, I found a small, soft egg shell stuck to her rear end feathers. I cleaned it off of her and she seemed fine for the rest of the day. Today, she did it again (picture below). I also gave her an epsom salt bath today and she pooped while she was in there. Part of the poop almost looks like a worm but I cant confirm (again, picture below). Does anyone have any advice?

Hi! Sorry to hear of your troubles. It really sounds like you are doing MANY things right. What i would do, if it were me is get a fecal float. If you can not get one i would worm her as it could be worms robbing her of some of the good nutrients you are providing.

Well, that would be my next indicated step b4 fearing the worst.

I'm not sure about worms from the pictures. It looks more like intestinal lining which is probably being shed because she is straining harder to pass the soft eggs. (Intestinal lining is harmless).

More of concern is the consistent soft eggs. It sounds like you are providing enough calcium in her diet. The only thing I can think of is to make sure she is getting the oyster shell and feed in ample proportion...which she might not be if she is a hen on the bottom of the pecking order. That might take some flock shifting, or isolating her long enough to see what may be going on.

My thoughts.
