I have 2 buff orps that started laying last week. Their eggs are flat brown in color. I also have 2 black australorps the started laying yesterday and their eggs are kind of a satin (shinny) appearance. Is this a breed trait or just a first egg trait? I don't have any buff orp first layed eggs to compare them to. They are so tasty my hens can't keep up with my eating habits yet. John

my sex links both golden and amber have alot of shiney"bloom" coating on their eggs, the RIR's have some too, it isn't as noticable because their eggs are a bit lighter brown, my Barred rock has really light brown pinkish/white eggs and they don't seem to have as much bloom as the sex links or the RIR's, more flat looking? I suspect the different color of egg and the ammount of each individual bird's bloom differ so this could cause the difference? just a theory....
