egg shells crack easily also egg yolks break easily .

my laying hens lay eggs that have shells that break easily also the yolks break when fried even though they are fresh eggs. the hens run loose during day in field. what is lacking ?

It sounds like they need more calcium. Try giving them some oyster shell. You can buy it at the feed store.

bobby.....my opinion, would be they need Oyster shell...to harden up those shells. Offer it to them in a pan, free choice...they will only eat what they know they need.

How old are the hens? That can happen in old age.

How old are they. The older they get, the tinner the shells become. Oyster shells may help some.

they need free chice oyster shell.or it could be something they are going through.

Another good source of calcium is dairy products. However, I've only ever given these as a treat (yogert, oatmeal made with milk, etc). Putting them out every day would be a pain, so oyster shell is better.
