I have a chicken that just started laying two weeks ago. Her egg shells are hard as rocks and the membrane under the shell is super tough too. The chickens pen is on top of gravel... Is this why?

Just means she has a GREAT diet with lots of calcium!

Backyard eggs have much thicker shells than supermarket eggs. It's normal!!! and a good sign!

I had to re-teach my kids how to crack an egg! The membrane thickness lead to some messy mornings for a while.

Yes super good healthy eggs, that is how they should be. good hens.

few months back our membranes were so strong, i actually peeled an entire uncooked egg of the shell, then had to cut the membrane with scissors.

yes, its definitely the membrane that is the problem. The shells crack, but the membrane stays intact and I end up having to pick egg shells out of everything.
