egg shells

a friend who used to have chickens, has reccomended putting old broken egg shells in the run. this just seems a little odd to me, any one got any advice.
 
I think that you may want to crush them a little so they don't resemble the eggs they came from. You don't want to encourage egg eating. Around here we put them in an open container in the garage until dried and then they are crushed and added to their oyster shell.

Being that they are in a run, I'd crush them up first....but they LOVE them. My chickens free range and when I throw eggs shells onto the compost pile they are all over them. They are an excellent source of calcium.
