Egg Shells

No need to cook them. Just dry them well, crumble, then mix into their feed.

I keep an old pan in my oven that I toss shells into. I take it out when I use the oven then when I'm finished I put it back in. The residual oven heat dries the shells. When it's full I crush them then mix into the hen feed.

They take awhile to air dry. If you want to speed the process, have a nasty old cookie sheet and be ready. The next time you bake something, after you've pulled your dish/cake/bread out of the oven, just stick the shell pan in. There is a lot of residual heat left. They'll "finish" right off and they crumble up easily.

No, it's not necessary, but since most folks have the shells anyway and often find the need to supplement the calcium supplied by their layer feed it's a good form of recycling.
