so I am only a week in and started with full grown birds. first time with chickens and loving it. in the flock are 2 buff orpingtons, one Columbian wynadotte spelling off maybe, 2 leghorns I think and 2 black I have no ideas. I bought batteries tonight so will be posting pics tomorrow. my question is this.. I have learned form reading that egg size is not related to bird size-at least not 100 percent. what about color...I had assumed the supposed Columbian was laying the large white eggs I get..but just read last night that they lay light browns. I thought the orpingtons and the two smaller black/brown girls were laying brown and the 3 white girls were laying the white eggs. never assume I am sure you all are thinking. So do particular breeds only lay certain colors and I would imagine crosses of course throw that theory anyway maybe....

Egg color is specific to breed. The lobes indicate egg color for the most part. Leghorns are your white layers. BO and wyandottes have red lobes and will lay brown eggs. Each hen will have her shade and shape that you will be able to identify with some time.

http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html The Henderson chicken breed chart lists some common breeds and has egg color on there. Crosses will throw things off, but with brown/white basically brown egg color is dominant to white egg color so if a parent in the mix lays brown the offspring will usually lay some shade of brown.
Egg size does not really correspond to the size of the bird, ie your average White Leghorn is maybe 1/3-1/2 the size of a Jersey Giant but will lay a larger egg usually. With pullets, they will start small then eggs will gradually get larger as the birds continue to lay until they get to whatever is normal for their breed.
If you want to try and figure out what your girls are you could post pictures in the What Breed/Gender forum www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this
