Our first hen started laying early @ 16 weeks (she's a RSL), we call her the over-achiever. Since then she has been giving and egg a day for two days, then she takes one or two days off. So far we've gotten six eggs, including one double yolk. I gathered today's egg and it's still the same small size as the first. My husband thinks that they should be getting bigger. I think that they are fine considering how early she started laying.

So, who's right here?! lol

Sometimes it takes a while for them to up in size. The double yoke falls under the category of a learners egg and doesn't count to what her normal size will be.

One of my RSL's laid her first egg three days ago at 14 weeks! She has since laid one every day but they are all about the size of a golfball.

I am getting five a day from 16 wk old pullets. They are all small like banty eggs.

They will gradually get bigger as she lays more. So gradually that you won't really notice it. There is usually another increase in size when the hen has her first adult molt. (12-18 months old)

If you haven't keep one of the early ones as a reference. One day in a few weeks or months, when you think to compare it, will be a oh moment.

The average weight of the eggs I got from my chickens was around 35-40 grams in the first weeks of laying. It took them about 2 months to get to an average of 55-58 grams currently. And they're still getting larger as we speak. I have weighed and kept track of every single egg they laid so I have a nice history of their laying behavior since day one.

The change is very gradual and some chickens will only lay small eggs, that is determined by the breed.
