We just started a flock of production reds. They just hit 24 weeks and last week we started getting 2-4 eggs per day from 12 hens. They are laying them anywhere but the nesting boxes and the eggs are small. Most are no bigger than a bantam egg. Will the size improve. We had researched and was informed that they would lay large brown eggs and we have had other brown egg layers that lay much larger.

I bought 16 Production Reds from Ideal Poultry that were day old on Feb. 22. Two started laying at 15 weeks old. I am now getting 12 to 14 eggs per day. They will progressively get larger. Mine started laying in the nest box with out any straw in them. No problem not laying in nest box.

I have been told that they will get bigger as the hens get older.

Mine started laying about a week and a half ago at just fourteen weeks and the eggs are the size of a golf ball!

our production reds lay anything from small to double yolkers. They do get larger with time but I have one who has consistently laid small eggs... hers never got larger. Be patient and I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the size of your eggs :)

Does feed make a difference?
I was feeding mine grower when i got my first egg and they liked about ten days finishing the bag. I let them finish the grower and started them on laying pellets.

Diet can effect performance. The better the diet the better the performance. Pullet eggs usually start out smaller then increase in size are the chicken further matures.
