Egg sizes over time

@Ridgerunner Thank you--that was fascinating! And good to know. I haven't weighed eggs in awhile, but my husband weighed a couple tonight, and it looks like our average pullet egg is up to around 42 grams now, after about 9 weeks of laying. Maybe we'll get to large eventually, lol

Our pullets have only been laying for about 3 weeks and their eggs have typically been in the low 50's grams. But we got one very large egg the other day, which was 76 grams!

Looks like the Browns are doing really good in size development and the brown egg with white speckles is now almost completely brown. Just for comparison, a grocery store Large egg is 55.5 x 42.8 (average of 12 eggs we still had in the refrigerator). I'll have to be that werid-o in the grocery store with a micrometer and XL white eggs and Large & XL Brown eggs measuring them next time I go without the Mrs. đź‘˝

I need to know if there is any interest in me continuing this thread, as I am considering going to weekly or just stopping it.

Finding that after 2 weeks the eggs hit the classification of "Large" and thinking that "Extra Large" will take 2 months. Btw, all 5 of my Leghorns are now laying as of this week.

It's up to you.
I think the lack of participation is because most folks weigh there eggs rather than measuring as you are doing.

How have you determined that?

How have you determined that?

I've measured store bought eggs and compared them to mine. Now as I've measured over the past few weeks, I've noticed a decline in growth rate, but still a slight change in size to my largest egg. So my 2 months to reach X-Large really is a "hunch" and not laid in a mathematical equation. Their chickens, so I'm not going to over think things.
I've read it takes around 9 to 12 months of laying to reach full egg size, so it'll be fun to see when the girls' eggs reach full size as I have all the confidence in the world that they'll surpass what others have done. :gig
