On most days my hens lay nice large eggs, but a couple of times a week I find a much smaller egg in the nest. Should a hen's eggs be fairly consistent in size? All of them have been laying for ten months. They are all pretty much the same size and based on the breed index, all should be producing large eggs. Just wondering and hoping nothing is wrong with one.

Maybe not all of your hens have started to lay yet. Could be new layers just starting. Just a thought.

Egg size generally increases with age but once in a while one or two hens will revert, especially after a moult. Nothing to worry about. Also,I've had hens that tended to lay small eggs--I sometimes wonder if there is some bantam in their line that causes this--might depend on the breeder.
