I have 8 RIR that are 20 weeks old. Currently no one is laying, however, 3 of my red feathered girls have started making what sounds like a dove sound. Its a beautiful little cooing . These are my first chickens so I'm a bit lost.

Cooing is not how I'd decribe an egg song. Your birds will start to sqaut for you when sexualy mature meaning they are at point of lay and in aweek or two make a loud distressed repetative noise when about to lay an egg. It's decidedly different from distress noise of a predator being around but just as loud.

Sqauting is what the do for cockerels and cocks showing submission and bracing for mounting. When you step near or even start to put your hand over the back they squat down. Makes for easy management to pick up the birds. They stop squating for you if they've a cockbird in the flock.

Thank you very much. That cleared it up for me. Several of them do squat for me so maybe soon. I guess the cooing sound is just a " I'm happy " song then. As for the predictor call, they haven't had that issue yet. My dogs keep everything so far from the chickens they are overly protected at times. My rottweiler sleeps in the middle of a chicken pile during the day and when they move he goes with.

Oh!! So they start that about a week or so before hand? Yupp they are close!!! Yay!!! Eggs!!!!
Hard to say how long before they lay that they may vocalize like that....an alarm call sounds very similar.
Enjoy the cooing before this sounds starts up....lol.
