ive found chickens will actually do this. w/o eating the shell, even though the majority of time they eat the whole thing as you mentioned.

I can picture one of those cactus-flower-drinking birds punching a hole in an egg and sucking out the contents. But I can't remember what those birds are called.....

We don't have chipmunks here, but we have Grackles and Cactus Wren. I hope it was a one time thing though, that really ticked me off.
