Egg tooth falling off after first pip before zipping

Thank you, will do but I'll definately be keeping an eye on him/her until it's out.
Ok. Just make sure you don't assist him. He'll be able to hatch on his own. They don't really need the egg tooth after they externally pip. It's just needed to make that first pip. When he hatches I'd love to see pics! What breed is he?
Also, Welcome to BYC! :frow

First time incubating and the second chick to pip. I noticed the egg tooth looks like it's drying out and about to fall off. Any advice on what to do? Chick is peeping and pipped almost 8 hrs ago.

If after 24 hours since the pip the chick has not made any progress you can assist. Many threads here on the forum how to do this, not as scary as it sounds. Read up on it so you are ready if you need to intervene.
keep an eye on the chick, you should be able to see it’s beak through the pip hole as long as it keeps moving its beak and opening and closing, then it is OK.
Good luck.😊

It hatched just fine on its own, just came out now. @MGG they are australorp mixes hence the yellow colouration on this one. This one and her little friend are totally playing soccer with the other eggs but I've read up that it's encouragement for the others to come out so not too worried. The yellow own looks just like another chick (3 weeks old) I got from the same person I got the eggs from so she is going to grow up into a beautiful bird. Thanks for the advice and the information, I was trying to find out if they needed the egg tooth after the first pip.

Yay!!! :wee
Congrats. It's absolutely adorable. :love
Yeah, the egg tooth is mainly just to puncture the air cell for the internal pip, and for that first external pip.
Haha, they always knock the eggs around. They'll be ok. You can take out the babies in a few hours once they start to fluff up.
Congrats again! Enjoy them.

@MGG I have a question for you, four out of 16 have hatched so far, I have one that I think died after it pipped, not sure why, and eleven that haven't even pipped yet. Do all the chicks generally hatch at the same time, do I have hope for the remaining eleven eggs or should I assist the them? The last pip I got was about 24 hrs ago.

What day are they on now?
Yeah, sometimes chicks pip and die. They just are too weak to make it. Don't worry about it. It happens.
You'll need to candle the remaining 11. Look for internal pips, they'll look like this.

And any movement. Try to get pics of all of them, you can post them here. Any that are 100% alive, put a check mark on. Any that you're unsure about, put a ? on.

Day 23 finishes in about 7 hrs from now, I did just candle one of them and I saw movement but no internal pip. I'm actually meant to be out most of the day today, and about to leave in 10 mins😬. I really don't have time to candle right now. Is it ok if I just leave them be for about maybe 6-8 hrs?

Oh ok. Were they in a cool spot or something in the incubator? Did you check where they are with a calibrated thermometer? That's good that they're alive at least. Are you sure you set them all at the same time?
Are you not in the US I'm guessing? Lol
They should be ok. You'll want to candle when you get back though.

I did try and check the temperature using a medical temp. not sure how accurate it was as I got lots of different results, pretty sure it's fairly accurate, maybe 0.1 or so off cause I did put a wall temp in with the eggs and it was showing 37. I set all eggs in the incubator within a span of 3 mins. No I'm not in the US, I'm in Australia. I'm still out atm so I'll check them as soon as I get home. Thanks for your help I'll let you know how it goes when I get home.
