After the massacre of all but one of my chicks, I got rid of the raccoon that caused the problem. But, I know more will follow. I don't want to set leg hold traps because of the risk that a dog will get caught. I am considering the egg trap (name is based upon it's shape).

This trap is pretty specific to raccoons and could be left around the coop and left without concern of a dog getting caught. I was hoping for some insight from someone who has used these traps.

I do recognize that I can set a box trap but I end up catching squirrels.

Not sure of that trap. Use a live trap with eggs as bait, coons love eggs, just placed eggs in the back. only catch coons, possum, and sometime skunks

this is the first time I ever heard of an egg trap..

looks like it should work..

I wonder if it could catch a weasel if he stuck his head in it.. If so, I would buy one in a heart beat..

I have caught some huge coons in a live trap.. One I had to shoot in the trap because I was afraid to handle the trap with him in it..

what would you do with a large, angry one like that caught in an egg trap?

For relocation or release. You cover it with a garbage can. The paw sticks out the side. The release. Slide a piece of plywood under the can, flip it. Then you can slide the lid on. I don't recommend leaving it for the trash guy.

A have a heart is much simpler. Those eggs are designed for a trapper thats working a trap line around residential areas.

Well i already see one that wants to relocate I prefer the fur hat deal but that is me and i dont believe in pawning off my troubles for a later date or for someone else. Oh by the way a weasels head wont fit in the opening of the egg trap it is a small opening. If you want something for weasel buy a body grip trap one of the smaller ones and set them in a little cubby or if i am trapping around the house use fish oil and i use of all things a cat litter bucket to put bait in and then set the trap in the front but you have to take the good with the bad once it gets caught in that trap it dont come back.

Wow, I couldn't imagine a snarly coon writhing around on the end of a tied down line. I know when mine are caught in a trap, that they are quite intimidating...to a point, after all, I am the one with the gun....

However, I think I would prefer mine caged rather that "tied to a tether" .

If a coon can get it's paw in there, I am sure a weasel can get it's head in..
I am not bothered by sending any predator to predator heaven..
I would not trap them if I could shoot them..
I was just concerned about people who might set one of those egg traps in a location where they could not shoot, if necessary..

I like the idea of keeping a trap set at all times. I figure soaking the trap in anise will attract the coons and not anything else. I might even create a little cubby hole in the coop that the coon could reach into -- getting them by both smell and curiosity.

I did see a couple of sites where possum and skunk were also caught -- something I could also live with. I think a dog is pretty much out of the question.
