Hi there. Quite new to having chickens it's only been about 3 months. I have two chooks and both have been laying. One lays an egg everyday and the other it's every second or third day which is fine with us. My question that in the last week or so the one that lays every few days has started giving us an egg that also seems to have another egg around it. No shell just the yolk and egg white. So in the coop you have her perfect egg and then the rest of that. Why is this and what can I do to help her. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to BYC!!! :)

That is normal for new layers and she may stop on her own but you should give your chickens a good supply of oyster shell to help build up the extra eggs strength so it can be a normal egg too.

If it isn't working try feeding her your chickens dried egg shells- chickens love them and they are a great supply of calcium with a calcium level of 97%

I agree with chickenychicken.

you can also post at 'chicken behaviors and egg laying.' It's common for new layers to have glitches in the egg delivery system at onset.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Definitely check out the link provided by NorthFLChick. And like trailrider330 said, make sure they have calcium. Either oyster shell or eggshells. Calcium plays a big role in the contractions of the oviduct and uterus to produce an egg. Without enough calcium hens can become egg bound very easily. Additionally, lack of this nutrient can draw calcium out of her bones resulting in weak bones and sometimes bone breakage.

If your birds are still young, it's normal for them to lay a couple "odd" eggs. Their bodies are still getting the hang of laying.
