I currently have an auto egg turner that is for chicken eggs. Yesterday I was given 6 quail eggs to try. I am not even certain if they are fertile but really want to give them a try. I don't see myself ever hatching quail again so I don't want to buy the quail trays. I know that I could hand turn them but am honestly so busy I think I would either forget or I would remember that it needs to be done but would not be home TO turn them. So I was trying to think of ways to modify my chicken egg turner. Here is what I came up with... do you see any potential issues that I am not seeing?
Because they are so much smaller I was afraid that they were either going to fall through the hole in the bottom or they were going to rock too much. I cut up a paper egg carton and then lined it with paper Easter grass. They are in there pretty good and do not wobble at all when turned. I was not sure if the hole it the bottom of the turner was needed for air circulation or if it was just there to allow room for the pointy end of the egg or both, so I did cut a small hole in the bottom of the carton. My only other concern was for the grass holding in too much heat.
Has anyone else ever tried to modify their turner? Was is successful? What did you use?

It amazes me sometimes the inovations us poultry lovers, or should I say obsecessed
, will come up with. I do not really think the straw will will affect heat retention as long as air can flow around it fairly freely. It may become more of an issue closer to hatch,, but then you should be getting them in hatching placement anyway. Good luck and keep us updated
