Ok, first relax! Depending on what type of egg-turner you are using, the turner may turn so slowly as to not be "visible". For my first hatch I, too, thought mine wasn't working. But before I removed it from the bator, I left it in all day and went back at several intervals to check the position of the eggs. And sure enough, it indeed was working. I just couldn't tell from glancing in there!
So if you decide that the thing is really broken and need to turn by hand, just remove the turner from the bator. You will lay your eggs on their sides (using a pencil, mark one side with an "X" and one side with an "O"). It seems to be the general concensus that an odd number of turns per day works best so that the egg does not lay on the same side every night. A minimum of 3 turns per day, but 5 to 7 turns is much better.
Incidentally, can you tell me what egg-turner you are using?
