Is it necessary to have an egg turner?

can I use a bottom half of an egg carton and just rotate the eggs?
or will it break down or cause a fire?

You don't need to have an egg turner, you can turn by hand, minimum 3 times a day (24 hour period) or put the eggs in an egg carton (upright - fat end up) and tilt the carton. I personally prefer hand turning the eggs if I'm not using a turner, but if you have loose air sacs in the eggs (for example from shipped eggs) it's better to incubate them in an egg carton and tilt them.
