Today was day 4 of medicating with Safe-guard. As I understand it - there is a 10 day egg withdrawal. Do I begin counting, the day after medicating is complete (10 full days, unmedicated)? Or, do I count from the day treatment began (5 days of treatment & 5 days unmedicated)? I've been tossing the eggs - not sure if they can even go into the compost.

There is a 14 day egg withdrawal with SafeGuard, beginning with the first day of treatment.
If doing a 5 consecutive day treatment, it will be a total of 19 days. If using a one time dosage followed by a second dosage in 10 days, it will be a total of 24 days.

Thank you so much. Very helpful.

@Eggcessive

Edit: I'm a little confused. I was told I do need a second round of medication, 10 days after the 1st round.
But - I was also told that a second round of medication is not necessary.

"Medicate 5 days in a row", and then 14 days withdrawl - 19 days total?

I will add - and I really don't know what I should expect - that I have not seen any worms in droppings, since the initial sighting, which looked like worms, but also a bit like grass. So, this is potentially, a precautionary worming.

The reason for a lot of confusion with SafeGuard dosage is that only roundworms are treated with one dose followed by a second dose in 10 days. But other worms (capillary, gapeworms) require a 5 consecutive day treatment. With either treatment use a 14 day withdrawal during and after treatment.
Thank you. ♡ I'm sorry to be such a pest. I get it, now :)

You are far from alone in your confusion, no need to apologize.

I am treating my chickens for roundworm and capillaria. They are on Day 5 of consecutive treatment and will get a follow-up dose on Day 10, as per my wonderful avian vet.

But, some quick research online -- with plenty of conflicting information -- left me bewildered, too. Sounds like you are getting some solid advice here.

Best of luck with your birds!

Thank you! Good luck to you, as well. Just finished day 5. Phew! My girls are so glad THAT'S over! 😊
