Hi

One of my chickens is laying a egg with no hard shell somedays and then when she does produce a hard shell its very thin.
So If i am not around to collect the egg it can get broken by the other chickens.

I feed my chickens layer mash, they have greens to eat they have scratch mix and shell grit.

So i am starting to think maybe there is something wrong with the chickens laying cycle as all the other chickens produce very nice egss.

Does anyone out there have any advice for me.

Jean01,
I'm sure this tidbit won't help you much, but one time, when I lived on the farm, one of our hens fell into the stock tank and almost drowned before I could save her.

The next couple of eggs she laid didn't have a hard shell-just a rubbery exterior. I wish I could offer more advice, but I had often wondered if anyone else had seen such an occurence.

If she is a new layer, it tends to happen from time to time until she is regulated (which happens on her own) If she is not a new layer, you may want to introduce free choice oyster shell for calcium or feed fortified with calcium. Another thing that will help is adding egg shell to their treats! I hope this helps!

I recently had this happen to me...I have 2 hens in one pen and not sure which laid the shellless egg. I have an older hen about 2 years and a young hen about 7 months old. My older hen has never had an egg like this though she has laid a fart egg before only once. My young hen has had wonderful eggs since she began laying so not sure of the problem. They both have also not laid in 4 days and on the 3rd day of no laying is when I got the shellless egg. I fed mine boiled egg shells lastnight so we shall see. Mine eat a mix grained scratch and laying mash which I am going to be switching to pellets. They eat fresh grass daily..So unsure of this problem but I took a picture. The insides were perfect just missing a shell.
