I have a year old hen who I discovered had feces caked all over her rump. I cleaned her up yesterday, and discovered that this has been going on for a while- under the poo was a large crusted over pitted sore. I got her well cleaned and put bacitracin on the sore. Today, she isn't listless, but won't eat yogurt with oats (something I am trying based on some posts I've read here to clear up diarrhea) I watched her try to poo, and she has diarrhea (mucusy) but also seemed to be struggling to push something out of her vent.
When cleaning her up again just now, I did feel inside her vent and can feel an egg not far down.
Does this mean that she is eggbound? I don't know if she's laying or not- all of my hens lay in the same box.
If you can feel an egg in her vent, does that always mean eggbound? Could this also cause the diarrhea? Could the diarrhea alone account for the sore on her butt?
Thanks,
I am at a loss.

she is quite possibly egg-bound, esp. if you can feel the egg. There are several different websites (some I posted earlier re: this with tips on helping) I had an older hen with this issue, but she was finally able to get hers out (it was long and cone shaped, followed very quickly by a regular sized egg). She had been laying on her side panting, etc...) sometimes you can help and sometimes you can't- I will search for those websites. The key is to not break the egg inside of her. As a last resort you can try and manipulate the egg so that it comes out, but this is pretty risky in an of itself, which is why I would only do this as a last resort

here, read this post and see if it will help you out. Good luck.
(some of this can probably be ignored in your situation, I'd start middle of pg. 2, that's where we discussed egg bound, )

Thanks for the info and help cowgirl. Do you think that the large sore/ulcerated area on her bum is related to being eggbound? She has quite a large sore under her vent and a small spot above it. I'm worried about the diarrhea as well. Should we be concerned about that or is that a symptom of being eggbound? Just want to rule out any possibility of an infection/virus affecting her.

more than likely it is related to being egg-bound and it can increase her chances of becoming infected if you do have to try some manipulating. The primary concern is probably the egg being stuck. Remember also, that chickens at times have poo stuck to their hind ends and it doesn't bother 'em, so everything should still work as it is supposed to in "keeping stuff out".
