Eggbound hen - am I crazy to pay a vet $150?

Not the least bit crazy, if you believe a beings real worth bears no relationship whatsoever to its initial cost in dollars or the cost to do it in. I could buy a small country with what I've spent on vet bills (maybe even a large country!), and at times work 3 jobs to be able to pull it off, but when it succeeds in bringing quality back to their lives, and they go on to experience joy, it feels priceless. As with anything, not everyone would agree, or be able to do the same, but no matter. You are doing what your heart tells you and I hope the vet is able to help her at this point. Sometimes despite our best efforts nothing can be done, but it is clear you will feel better for having tried.

Really hoping Avril comes through all of this just fine. If it were me, I would have spent the money for the vet too. My future DH would tell me I was half past crazy, but as long as my wallet could take the abuse, I would do anything to save an animal.
 
Well, I can hardly believe it! I put Avril in a large dog cage in the garage, so I could bring her to the vet later. I held off on taking her until I talked to the vet - was going to have him surgically remove the egg AND give her a hysterectomy at the same time, as she has had problems with being eggbound before. I don't want to go through this again.
I went out to check on her, and she had laid an egg! An entire week after I could feel that egg in her belly, after I tried to pull it out, after the vet tried to pull it out! There is another one right behind it, so she's not out of the woods yet. But I put her back in the coop, and she went straight to the nest box. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she lays the 2nd egg, and then hopefully she will be ok.
Thanks everyone for their support! I guess Avril's motto is: I will lay no egg before it's time.

What a relief that must have been for her!!! I once had a hen (Betty, RIP) lay 4 in a day - they were backed up badly, and 2 were sort of deflated things. Your Avril may really benefit from a Tums so she has some added strength to get the darn thing (s) out! (crush ina bit of water and administer slowly via dropper along her beak line, so she swallows on her own and doesn't choke).

Glad she passed the egg. I would pay for the vet for one of my girls without a problem. The are not just chickens they are part of the family. they willingly give of themselfs so we must also be willing tohelp when needed.
