Our 10 month old Easter Egger, Brownie, seemed broody yesterday. I work nights, and woke up at 3:30 to see she was in the nesting box. She was still there at 9pm that night, and my wife said she finally got up and had runny poop. She then came back and layed in nesting box. She was only sitting on a WL egg, and not her own. Fast forward to today, she was still in the box, until our bossy WL "Sweet Dee" told her to get out. Then she finally went out, and ate, and scratched around. But I noticed she was lethargic. I went out to spend time with the chickens, really to check on her, and found a (large, normal) bloody egg in the run. I stayed out there for a while and watched her lay another egg, this time soft shelled, right in front of me. She's still a little slow, but scratching around.
She normally lays 7 eggs in 8 days. 4 on/1off/3 on/1 off. I keep track, and this should be current with her timing, so I'm hoping no more is stuck. If I can help it, I do not want to bring her in for a salt bath, as the wind chill is in the low teens, and tomorrow is going to be a snow day. Her crop is red as normal, but her behind shows her pain. What do you think?

She may some egg laying difficulties, so make sure that she is eating layer feed plus getting some crushed oyster shell on the side for hard egg shells. Laying problems are common, and it sounds like she may have been egg bound. Offer her water to drink, as low clacium or dehydration can be causes of egg binding. Look to see if she was pecked around her vent by others, as well.

Thanks for the tips. I know her calcium is good. They all have access to as much calcium as they want, and her shells have always been very hard. She is more lively today, and I believe she’ll be fine. If it’s possible, I think maybe she had that soft egg stuck, and maybe that hard egg passed by it, causing the blood? I wonder why she had that soft egg. Every egg she puts out has a very hard shell.
