Eggbound peahen

I am about at my wit's end. Haha
I just talked to the vet and they said they want her to come in to the office. They want to sedate her and take the egg out.
I take my parrots to this vet and I know she is excellent with birds but sedating a peahen that is still alert and urinating/defecating seems like a move that might be too drastic? I feel like taking her in the car to an unfamiliar place and sedating her on top of that might be risky? Even though this vet is great I feel like you guys have more experience with peahens specifically....would you do this or keep trying at home?

I think if your vet wants her to go in you should do it. Yeah, it's risky, but no more risky than letting her stay egg bound.
Okay, thanks! The first they can do is tomorrow morning, so I took the appointment. I will continue to do everything here at home today and maybe have a good outcome before tomorrow.
One more question. The CG Tractor Supply sold me says it expired in June 2019! I know most drugs stay good longer, but could this be the problem?
Thanks so much.

The GC is probably fine. I would have the vet remove the egg. When the hen was adding the shell it could be very rough making it stick and not slide out. I think it is the right thing to do. I once had a chicken hen that prolapsed the canal with the egg. I cut the prolapse to remove the egg and treated with antibiotics and she healed and layed again for another year or two.

Wishing you the best & staying hopeful that the egg will pass today. I don’t have any advice to offer, but sounds like you have some great advisors already! Pulling for you and your hen!

My peahen went to the vet this morning. (Her name is Bleu by the way). I had to drop her off as that is what they are doing here due to the coronavirus. The vet gave her fluids, tube fed her, KY, basically everything I have been doing to see if she could get the egg to drop. She says she believes things somehow got twisted around internally and are keeping the egg in. She is going to spay her tomorrow morning. She is cautious because of the stress of anesthesia given all that Bleu has been going through, and also because of infection. Please say a prayer for Bleu that all will go well with the surgery and recovery. :) Thank-you!
